Shopify engineering, end to end: apps, storefronts, Liquid, and performance.

Eugene Shcherbakov · Helsinki

I build Shopify SaaS at Upnova: one codebase, 600+ live stores, every theme setup you can imagine and a few you can't. The product I work on has quietly processed $40M+ of other people's revenue, which I find much more interesting than my own landing page.

Upnova · Full Stack Engineer · Shopify

Shopify upsell app · $1M+ ARR · 600+ merchants · $40M+ merchant revenue

I work across the full Shopify product: app features, storefront integrations, custom Liquid templates, and AI-powered merchant tooling across hundreds of live stores. I've contributed to the migration from Builder.io onto our own React infrastructure, and I debug INP regressions across diverse theme setups.

Shook Digital · Full Stack Engineer

TikTok-partner video SaaS · #1 fastest-growing startup in Finland (Sifted, 2024)

I joined early and helped grow the product into the #1 fastest-growing startup in Finland. I built web-based video editor features with a focus on performance, scalability, and bulk editing workflows, and sat in on customer calls to shape where the product went next.

{% section 'about' %}

I started a company at 17 (BotBrains, a no-code editor that generates trading-bot code, featured on the official MetaTrader site), then spent the next years shipping SaaS: a fleet-management MVP in 3 months, a video editor at the fastest-growing startup in Finland, and now Shopify products at Upnova.

My opinion after 3+ years of this: most engineering effort is wasted on work that demos well and dies in production. Diverse merchant themes, slow devices, and real traffic are the actual test suite. That's the work I like, and the work I'm good at.

01Ship with clarity

Scope tightly, communicate trade-offs early, and deliver work that holds up in production, not just in demos.

02Own the outcome

From merchant support to architecture migrations, stay close to the problem until the product actually works.

03Build for scale

Performance, maintainability, and merchant diversity matter when one codebase powers hundreds of storefronts.

04Stay product-minded

Engineering decisions should connect to customer impact, revenue, and the team's ability to move faster.
